Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of the management of the Federal College of Education (FCE), Gwoza, to commence full academic activities despite substantial support from the state government.
Zulum said the state had committed over N200 million as a take-off grant and completed extensive rehabilitation of the institution, yet academic programmes had not commenced.
The governor had earlier handed over the remodelled college to the Federal Ministry of Education after approving the allocation of the site and funding its rehabilitation.
The institution, formerly Teachers College Gwoza, now boasts over 100 renovated classrooms, modern laboratories, improved administrative facilities and staff quarters.
The state government also provided a housing estate comprising 12 two-bedroom units and additional accommodation for staff to encourage retention and smooth take-off.
Speaking during an inspection visit, Zulum expressed disappointment with the management’s performance, particularly the failure to demonstrate commitment to operationalising the institution.
“I am not happy because this college was established about three years ago, and principal officers were appointed. Yet there is little evidence of commitment to move the college forward,” he said.
The governor noted that many offices remained inactive and described the situation as unacceptable, given the level of investment made by the state government.
He said Borno State would forward its findings to the Federal Ministry of Education and recommend changes among some principal officers if necessary to ensure the commencement of academic activities.
