The leadership crisis in the Eyean Cattle Dealers Association in Benin City, Edo State, has deepened following the removal of the Chairman and Secretary of its Board of Trustees (BOT), Idris Adano and Awall Shafie, over alleged financial impropriety involving N116 million.
The association also elected Jidda Tahir and Ibrahim Shariff as the new BOT chairman and secretary, respectively.
Daily Trust gathered that five members of the seven-member board voted for the removal of the two officials during a trustees’ meeting held on April 25, 2026.
The former officials were also accused of neglecting issues affecting the association and failing to pay about N35 million owed to a company owned by Barrister Dele Edokpayi for clearing debris within the market.
Reacting to his removal, Adano described the allegations as an attempt by some individuals to create division and instability within the association.
In a statement jointly signed by Adano and the association’s secretary, Adam Gombe, they claimed members had passed a vote of confidence in the embattled chairman because of his transparency and leadership.
They urged members and stakeholders to disregard the purported removal.
However, counsel to the association, Ejiga Paul Enemona, maintained that the action was in line with the association’s constitution.
He warned that if the removed officials continued to present themselves as leaders of the union, the current leadership would report them to security agencies.
Enemona said the association had also applied to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to formalise the removal.
