Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has constituted an administrative investigation committee to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of St. Louis College, Kano.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s spokesman, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
The panel was constituted following the receipt of a formal petition from Nakudu Law Partners, solicitors to the mother of the late student, Mrs Nusaiba Rabi’u Dan Sheriff, regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of her daughter, Maimuna Sani Salisu.
According to the statement, the committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Ali Haruna Makoda.
The committee has been mandated to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the student’s death, establish a clear timeline of events and identify any lapses in supervision, student welfare management or institutional procedures.
Its terms of reference include examining the events leading to the incident, reviewing relevant medical records and reports, investigating the social environment within the school and assessing allegations of bullying, coercion or unauthorised disciplinary practices among students.
The panel is also expected to evaluate existing complaint and reporting mechanisms, review staff compliance with student supervision guidelines and recommend reforms to disciplinary and boarding school management systems.
Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the truth surrounding the incident is uncovered and that necessary steps are taken to prevent a recurrence.
The committee is expected to submit its findings and recommendations to the state government within the stipulated timeframe.
