Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government and the House of Representatives (DPR) have agreed to appoint Minister of the State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi to chair the newly formed Layoff Mitigation Task Force.
Hadi announced the decision on Friday following a meeting at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta.
“Everyone agreed to ask me to head the Layoff Mitigation Task Force because of my capacity to bridge various parties and stakeholders relevant to this matter,” Hadi told reporters during a press conference.
He noted that the task force is the result of a year of preparation. Its immediate priority will be to identify and map systemic issues within the industrial sector to protect Indonesian workers from sudden job cuts.
Moving forward, the task force plans to work closely with the National Police (Polri) Employment Desk to monitor corporate distress and share early-warning information on struggling companies.
Hadi highlighted that the task force will adopt a case-by-case approach to resolve corporate crises, while also pledging swift action against firms that refuse to fulfill severance pay and other legal rights for already terminated workers.
A tailored approach is necessary, Hadi explained, because modern layoff risks stem from diverse factors.
While raw material and supply chain disruptions traditionally force survival-driven job cuts, he pointed out that recent waves of layoffs have also been triggered by internal corporate governance failures and management conflicts.
“Regardless of the cause, we all share the responsibility to take mitigation measures,” Hadi affirmed.
Hadi and Manpower Minister Yassierli represented the executive branch at the high-level meeting.
The session also drew DPR Deputy Speakers Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, Presidential Special Adviser for Manpower Said Iqbal, and key representatives from major labor unions and the national police.
Dasco reaffirmed parliament’s commitment to collaborating closely with the government to shield the workforce from economic shocks.
“There will be regular coordination meetings involving the Layoff Mitigation Task Force, the executive branch, and the DPR to manage these risks,” Dasco said.
