Jakarta (ANTARA) -
Indonesia and Switzerland signed a memorandum of understanding on mineral and metals downstream processing in Basel on Tuesday, strengthening industrial cooperation and supply-chain resilience while supporting Jakarta's downstream industrialization agenda.
Indonesian Ambassador to Switzerland Ngurah Swajaya and Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs State Secretary Andrea Rauber Saxer initialed the agreement during Industry Day 2026.
In a statement issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Bern on Thursday, Ngurah said the agreement would elevate bilateral relations toward a more strategic partnership.
"Indonesia and Switzerland share similar characteristics. Both countries cooperate broadly while upholding multilateralism and international law," he said.
Ngurah added that both countries have built a strong foundation for cooperation and remain committed to promoting peace and shared prosperity.
He said Indonesia could become a strategic partner in strengthening Switzerland's industrial supply chains, while Swiss investment could reinforce Indonesia's industrial ecosystem and support the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
The agreement follows Swiss Economy, Education and Research Minister Guy Parmelin's visit to Jakarta and talks with Indonesian Investment and Downstream Industry Minister Rosan Roeslani in October 2025.
According to the embassy, the partnership marks Switzerland's first cooperation arrangement specifically supporting Indonesia's mineral and metals downstream processing program.
"Geopolitical developments require Switzerland to diversify supply chains by expanding cooperation with non-traditional partners, particularly Indonesia within ASEAN," Parmelin said.
SwissMEM President Martin Hirzel, whose organization hosted Industry Day 2026, said Switzerland and Indonesia have built a complementary, rather than competitive, economic relationship.
The countries, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations, have also strengthened ties through the Indonesia-EFTA Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, the Bilateral Investment Treaty, Mutual Legal Assistance cooperation, and the new minerals partnership.
Celebrating the anniversary under the theme "Trust, Innovation, Partnership," both governments reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation through mutual trust, innovation and equal partnership.
The shared values will help guide future bilateral cooperation, the Indonesian Embassy in Bern said.
