Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is exploring a bid to host the 18th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP18 CBD), scheduled for 2028.
Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat said in a statement on Friday that the nomination plan has received support from stakeholders both at home and abroad.
"As one of the world's most biodiverse countries, Indonesia has great potential to develop conservation-based financing mechanisms that protect ecosystems while generating economic benefits," he said.
The plan was discussed during Jumhur's meeting with International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits (IAPB) Co-Chair Dame Amelia Fawcett in London on Thursday on the sidelines of London Climate Week.
The meeting also focused on advancing a biodiversity credit scheme as a new financing instrument to support ecosystem conservation in Indonesia.
Jumhur said biodiversity conservation should go hand in hand with economic development, making sustainable green financing mechanisms increasingly important.
Responding to the proposal, Fawcett said Indonesia has strong potential to become one of the leading countries in developing global conservation financing instruments.
She also welcomed the establishment of the Environment Ministry's Biodiversity Credits Development Task Force, which is responsible for preparing policy studies, implementation schemes, and pilot projects.
The initiative is expected to strengthen international collaboration and position Indonesia as one of Asia's pioneers in biodiversity credits.
Indonesia and the IAPB also agreed to expand knowledge-sharing cooperation and strengthen dialogue at the COP17 CBD meeting, scheduled for October 2026 in Yerevan, Armenia.
"Indonesia's initiative is a pioneer in developing biodiversity credits in Asia and globally. This sends an important message about collaboration among countries and stakeholders to strengthen biodiversity conservation with a nature-positive spirit," Fawcett said.
