Churches in Naples' city centre are
offering shelter from the heatwave that is baking Italy and much
of the rest of Europe, according to a diocesan initiative
launched with Catholic charity Caritas.
Faced with the exceptional temperatures of recent days and to
concretely respond to the heat emergency affecting the city, the
Church of Naples, with the support of Diocesan Caritas, is
promoting an extraordinary initiative of solidarity and
hospitality.
Starting this week, some of the most important and cool
monumental churches in the historic center and diocesan care
facilities will open their doors to offer shelter from the heat,
a place to rest, and a refreshment point for the most vulnerable
and the homeless.
The Basilica of San Giovanni Maggiore will be open on Thursday
mornings and Saturday mornings; the Church of Santi Filippo e
Giacomo will be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays; The Basilica
of San Giorgio Maggiore will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
and the Solidarity Platform will be open daily.
"These places will remain open to welcome anyone in need, offer
shelter, and distribute refreshments. In a time of severe
weather-related hardship, churches are not just places of
prayer, but oases of freshness and proximity. No one should feel
alone or abandoned in the face of this emergency," a statement
reads.
