Former Italian rail chief Mauro
Moretti told Corriere della Sera Thursday he was ready to serve
five years in jail for the June 29, 2009 Viareggio train
disaster that killed 32 people and would start his term in
Orvieto jail as an "upright" man.
"How am I? I've reached this moment in perfect physical and
mental shape, and now I'm ready," said the former CEO of
Ferrovie dello Stato (FS).
"This sentence sets a very dangerous precedent regarding
managers' responsibility," Moretti said.
Moretti noted that he will be serving time even though he's 72
years old and "without making excuses about health, because," he
said, "I have a straight back and my head held high, as everyone
knows.
"I'm going in , and I hope it won't be for too long."
And regarding his prison experience as a special advisor to the
Italian National Council for Economics and Labour (CNEL), a
voluntary position that led him to develop rehabilitation
projects for inmates, he said: "I'm making myself useful. If I
were to sit around doing nothing, I'd go crazy."
