MANILA, Philippines—A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook a large swathe of Mindanao after striking waters south-southwest of Balut Island in Sarangani on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.
The quake, which struck at 7:34 p.m. local time, was tectonic in origin and was located 66 kilometers south-west of Balut Island. It had a depth of 45 kilometers.

Phivolcs initially placed the magnitude at 6.6.

Intensities were reported in the following areas:
Intensity V, or strong shaking, was reported in Kiamba, Malapatan, Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani; General Santos City; Koronadal City, Lake Sebu and T’boli, South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.
Intensity IV, or moderately strong shaking, was reported in Glan, Maasim and Maitum, Sarangani; Don Marcelino and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Davao City; Matanao, Davao del Sur; Koronadal City, Polomolok and Tupi, South Cotabato.

Intensity III, or weak shaking, was reported in Davao City; Matanao, Davao del Sur; parts of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Zamboanga City and Basilan.
Intensity II, or slightly felt shaking, and Intensity I, or scarcely perceptible shaking, were also reported in parts of Mindanao.

Phivolcs said damage is not expected, but aftershocks are expected.
