
MANILA, Philippines — There is no tsunami threat in any area after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit off the shore of Sarangani municipality in Davao Occidental on Friday evening, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said in an advisory.

With this, the bureau said that “no action [is] required.”

Phivolcs said that the epicenter of the earthquake was located west of Balut Island at 7:34 p.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 10 kilometers.
Phivolcs added that reported intensities were recorded in the following areas:
Intensity V: Kiamba, Sarangani
Intensity IV: Don Marcelino, and Santa Maria, Davao Occidental
Intensity III: Davao City; Matanao, Davao del Sur
Intensity II: Digos City, Davao del Sur; Monkayo, Mawab, and Maragusan, Davao de Oro
Meanwhile, instrumental intensities were logged in the following areas:
Intensity V: Malapatan, Sarangani; T’boli, South Cotabato
Intensity IV: Malungon, Maitum, Kiamba, and Maasim, Sarangani; Tupi and Koronadal City, South Cotabato
Intensity III: Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Tampakan, South Cotabato; Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat
Intensity II: Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Norala, Banga, Santo Niño, and Surallah, South Cotabato; Lebak, Isulan, Kalamansig, and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat
Intensity I: Magpet, M’lang, President Roxas, Cotabato; Columbio and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat /apl
