A 61-year-old man was placed in custody after being charged with raping his 13-year-old daughter on Friday, a year following a suspended sentence for harassing her mother.
On Friday afternoon, the prosecution detailed that the inquiry began with a report to the head of child protection services regarding a 13-year-old girl, the daughter of the defendant, an Egyptian citizen as reported by Times of Malta.
The girl reportedly told her teachers that her father had recently molested her.
The police announced that a magisterial inquiry has been initiated. Based on its findings, which featured statements from the minor, officers concluded there was enough proof to prosecute the accused.
The prosecution stated that during the supposed rape, the man confined his son in another room to execute the offence.
The court was additionally notified that the father had been found guilty of intimidating the mother of his children in the previous year.
The father denied the charges and sought bail.
Bail was refused due to strong opposition from the prosecution, which highlighted a major risk of evidence tampering. Additionally, Magistrate Anne Marie Thake indicated that allowing bail would be untimely at this point, since the man’s children have not yet provided their testimonies in the case.
The name of the defendant cannot be disclosed because of a court ruling to safeguard the minors.
Magistrate Anne Marie Thake granted a protection order for the victim and her family.
The prosecution was directed by Inspector John Spiteri, who was represented by Lawyer Miriayah Borg. Attorney John Demaria defended the suspect.
