The Algarve is expected to avoid the high pollen levels forecast across most of mainland Portugal over the coming week, offering some relief to hay fever sufferers.
According to the latest Pollen Bulletin published by the Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SPAIC), pollen concentrations will remain low in the Algarve and the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores until July 2, while much of the rest of the country faces high levels.
Across mainland Portugal, elevated concentrations are expected from olive and chestnut trees, as well as grasses, nettles, sorrel, plantain and other herbaceous plants, increasing the risk of allergy symptoms for sensitive individuals.
SPAIC notes that rainfall forecast for parts of the country on Friday could temporarily reduce pollen levels through what it describes as an “atmospheric washing” effect. However, concentrations are expected to rise again once the rain clears.
The organisation is advising allergy sufferers to monitor both pollen forecasts and weather forecasts, as changing conditions can have a significant impact on airborne pollen levels.
Grasses and nettles are expected to be the dominant pollen types in the atmosphere over the coming days, reaching levels considered high risk for people allergic to these species in several regions of mainland Portugal.
