
Thousands, including Filipinos, still trapped in Myanmar scam hubs
Despite the massive crackdown on scam hubs across the Thai-Myanmar border since 2024, human trafficking is still ongoing. During Myanmar military raids, many scam operations either relocated their operations or sold victims to other groups. As of June 25, around 5,300 individuals, including at least 18 Filipinos, remain trapped in at least four major scam compounds along the border in areas controlled by the Democratic Karen Border Army (DKBA) in Myawaddy, Myanmar. The victims also include nationals from Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
