How Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara’s Kids Really Feel About Spy Kids
Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara think their Spy Kids characters are cool enough to be great parents.
In honor of the original film’s 25th anniversary, PenaVega and Sabara reunited and detailed where their characters—the sibling spy duo Carmen Cortez and Juni Cortez—would be now.
“I think growing up in the Cortez family, they would be amazing parents.” PenaVega told E! News Will Marfuggi in an exclusive interview alongside Sabara at a Salvation Army summer camp. “They’re such a tight knit group.”
Indeed, the Cortez family was rounded out by Carmen and Juni’s super spy parents Gregorio Cortez (Antonio Banderas) and Ingrid Cortez (Carla Gugino) as well as their uncle Machete (Danny Trejo). So, Carmen and Juni had a lot to look up to.
“They’re surrounded by the most amazing community,” PenaVega continued.“It’s everyone’s dream. That’s all I want for my family. Just a beautiful, safe, loving home with a tight knit community.”
Meanwhile, Sabara—dad to Riley, 5, Barry, 2, and Mikey, 5 months, with wife Meghan Trainor—posited that his character is probably not far from who he is now.
“I think ‘cause we were so young, a lot of how our characters were written were kind of based on ourselves,” he shared. “So, I think Juni would just be a silly dad like me. Just a silly guy. I wear that silliness with a badge of honor. It’s super fun.”
But one way PenaVega and Sabara differ from their Spy Kids counterparts? They get to relive the magic of the film with their kids.

“I’ve sat down with my 5-year-old and we’ve watched the first three movies and it’s fun to watch him watch it as like, a movie goer,” Sabara shared. “For me, I’m just watching memories on a screen. Like, I’m not watching a movie I’m just watching playback.”
While Sabara’s son Riley hasn’t quite connected the dots that he’s watching his dad on the silver screen, PenaVega shared that her and husband Carlos PenaVega’s 9-year-old son Ocean has recently embraced her fame.
“I remember showing it to him years back and he was not interested at all,” PenaVega—also mom to Kingston, 6, and Rio, 4 with her husband of 12 years—recalled. “He was a big Sharkboy and Lava Girl fan. I was like, ‘What the heck dude!’ It was total betrayal.”
But years later, PenaVega shared that her 9-year-old thinks the movies are “so cool.”
“I never really thought he thought anything of it,” she admitted. “I just thought like I just thought he was like, ‘Oh, this is cool.’ Until we were all on an airplane and I watch him grab the shirt of the guy next to him and he goes ‘Hey mister,’ and the guy goes ‘Yeah? I’m listening.’ And he goes, ‘you see my mom back there? She’s in Spy Kids. And that’s my dad, he’s in Big Time Rush. I’m like, ‘What are you doing!’”
