Valverde Lawn Bowls Club in Almancil held the final of their President’s Shield on November 9. This is a singles’ knockout competition which attracted 24 entrants. This year a new format was tried with only two bowls being used. Bowls more than a metre from the jack did not count.
In the semi finals, Peter Hollis defeated David Russell and last year’s winner Malcolm McIntosh beat Peter Wilson. Club Captain Peter Hollis played a great final to deprive Malcolm of a second win.
Retiring club president Henry Parlour presented his shield at a luncheon party in the Don Camillo restaurant. Henry has been president and chief benefactor of the club since it was formed. He was presented with an engraved vase and a card featuring photographs of all Valverde members.
There was a champagne toast to Henry and his wife Fran, and it is hoped that they will continue to be a part of Valverde in the future.
