Jakarta's Gambir Station to add commuter rail service

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia plans to transform Jakarta's Gambir Station into an integrated rail hub serving both long-distance and commuter trains, expanding capacity and improving connectivity as the government modernizes the country's railway network.

"Gambir Station, which has served long-distance trains, will later be integrated with KRL commuter rail services," Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Friday.

The overhaul is part of a beautification program designed to give Gambir Station a modern appearance while positioning it as a flagship for Indonesia's railway system with upgraded passenger facilities.

Purwagandhi said the project follows President Prabowo Subianto's directive that Gambir Station should showcase the progress of Indonesia's public transportation infrastructure.

The government has appointed state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia, or PT KAI, to lead the redevelopment and expand the station's role to meet growing and increasingly diverse passenger demand.

Purwagandhi said adding KRL commuter services at Gambir would complement, rather than reduce, the role of Manggarai Station by strengthening integration across Jakarta's rail network.

The integration is expected to allow passengers to transfer directly between commuter and long-distance trains at Gambir, reducing travel time and improving convenience by eliminating additional station transfers.

The government also plans to add railway tracks to accommodate both commuter and long-distance operations, while service frequencies will be determined based on future operational requirements and passenger demand.

"The number of KRL services will be evaluated later. What is certain is that Gambir Station will serve both long-distance trains and KRL commuter services," Purwagandhi said.
