Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's anti-narcotics agency, working with the military and police, dismantled 59 drug trafficking networks over the past year, including seven international syndicates, as authorities intensified efforts to combat narcotics crimes, a senior presidential official said.
Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman, in a statement released in Jakarta on Saturday, said seven of the dismantled networks operated across international borders.
Law enforcement agencies also intercepted more than 200 tons of illegal narcotics with an estimated street value of 29 trillion rupiah, preventing the drugs from entering domestic distribution channels, Dudung said.
He said the results reflected the government's commitment to protecting the public, particularly younger generations, from the dangers of drug trafficking and substance abuse.
"This commemoration should reaffirm our collective resolve to fight drug trafficking and abuse as a real threat to Indonesia's future," Dudung said during an event marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
He said the annual observance on June 26 should serve as more than a ceremonial event and instead strengthen cooperation among government agencies and society in combating narcotics.
The threat remains severe, Dudung said, citing National Narcotics Agency data showing drug abuse prevalence in 2026 hovered above 2 percent, affecting more than four million people across Indonesia.
He said the figures represent more than mere data points as every case carries social consequences for families, communities and the country's long-term development.
"Drugs recognize neither age, social status nor geographic boundaries. As a nation, we share the determination to eradicate narcotics," Dudung said.
He urged communities to take an active role in preventing drug abuse, beginning within families, to protect future generations from narcotics-related threats.
Dudung said the anti-drug campaign supports the government's broader Asta Cita development agenda, particularly its goal of building a highly skilled, productive and globally competitive workforce through stronger human resource development.
