LIGAO CITY — Former Albay 2nd district Rep. Joey Salceda has urged stricter enforcement of firearm storage requirements following the recent school shooting in Tacloban City, saying preventing minors from accessing guns should be the government’s immediate priority.
In a statement, Salceda called for firearm license applicants and those seeking renewals to submit sworn affidavits detailing how and where their firearms are stored.
Salceda said this would strengthen compliance with Republic Act No. 10591, which requires firearms to be kept in secure place.

Salceda cited research indicating that child-access prevention laws help reduce firearm-related deaths and injuries among young people.
He also welcomed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order for a thorough investigation and tighter school security measures following the Tacloban school shooting, adding that secure firearm storage and improved school security could be implemented immediately while broader issues such as bullying and mental health are addressed. /gsg
