A van carrying a large quantity of non-compliant food products has been stopped after arriving in Malta via the ferry from Sicily.
According to the Food Safety and Security Authority (FSSA), the vehicle had travelled from Albania before transiting through Sicily and arriving in Malta, where it was flagged by the Tax and Customs Administration.
Following an inspection, officials identified a range of food products that breached food safety regulations, including meat, yoghurt, cheese, snacks, olive oil, soft drinks, beans, eggs, alcohol, salt and juices.
The FSSA said the products had either been transported at inappropriate temperatures, lacked the required labelling or were missing essential traceability documentation.
The food was immediately sealed and will now be destroyed to protect public health and safeguard the integrity of Malta’s food industry.
The Authority also noted that it had not been notified of the consignment’s arrival, as required by law, and reminded traders that they must register with the FSSA and notify it at least 48 hours before bringing animals, food, feed or plants into Malta, including goods arriving from within the European Union.
The FSSA thanked the Tax and Customs Administration for its assistance and said it will continue taking firm action against operators who fail to comply with food safety regulations.
