
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan—Two village councilors and 49 other cockfight aficionados in Cagayan were arrested for allegedly managing, engaging and participating in an illegal cockfight or “tupada.”
The apprehensions took place in Coastal 2, Barangay Casambalangan in Sta. Ana town on Friday, June 26 at 2:30 in the afternoon, police said on Saturday.
Police Brig. Gen. Mariano Rodriguez, Cagayan Valley regional police director, said the operators include a certain Froi, 54, and a certain Jojo, 49, both Casambalangan village councilors; Nest, 63, the alleged table manager; and Ar-ar, 54, who is said to be the “llamador” or bet caller.

Some 47 participants were also arrested.

At large was a certain Vere, alleged cockfight referee, who escaped from the police.
Seized from them were more than P208,000 cash, two cockfighting cocks with still attached gaffs, three other cocks, and 58 gaffs in two boxes.
Police from Cagayan province and Santa Ana town intelligence units, maneuver companies and mobile force battalions in the area conducted the anti-illegal gambling operation.
The seized items were inventoried at the cockfight site while the arrested men were brought to the police for questioning and documentation prior to the filing of charges for illegal gambling. /apl
