President Trump made a final appeal to Louisiana Republicans on Friday to support Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) in Saturday’s Senate runoff election, calling the lawmaker a “Great Star” and a “TOTAL WINNER” in one of this year’s most closely watched GOP primaries.
Letlow faces off against state Treasurer John Fleming (R) in a two-way race after incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who has emerged a Trump critic, failed to advance to the runoff after finishing third in the May primary.
The president praised Letlow as a “Highly Respected America First Congresswoman” in a post on Truth Social.
“I know Julia well, have seen her tested at the highest and most difficult levels,” he wrote, adding that she has “always delivered for Louisiana” and that she would fight to grow the state’s economy, cut taxes, support its energy industry and ensure law and order.
Trump added, “She has my Complete and Total Endorsement, and will never let you down!”
The president also gave remarks Friday during a tele-rally in support of the Senate hopeful.
Letlow finished first in the state’s May primary with nearly 45 percent of the vote, according to Decision Desk HQ. Fleming trailed behind in second place with 28.3 percent, while Cassidy was knocked out of the runoff after falling in third place with 24.8 percent of the vote.
The incumbent drew Trump’s ire after being one of seven GOP senators who voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol — prompting the president to back Letlow.
The victor of the GOP primary is favored to win the general election in November in the deep red state, which Trump carried in 2016, 2020 and 2024.
Letlow was first elected to the House in 2021 in a special election after her husband, Rep.-elect Luke Letlow (R), died of complications from COVID-19 before he could be sworn into office.
She quickly became a leading challenger to Cassidy, building her campaign around her support for Trump and criticizing the senator for his vote to convict the president in his second impeachment trial.
