A 41-year-old foreign woman has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her husband following a domestic dispute at a shared agricultural workers’ residence in Alfundão, in the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo.
A statement issued by PJ judicial police says the victim, also 41, and of the same nationality as his wife, died after being stabbed in the abdomen with a sharp object during an altercation on Sunday, June 21.
According to the PJ, the couple lived in a house shared by several families of the same nationality, all employed as agricultural workers in the Beja district.
Investigators say the attack followed an argument between the couple, who had a documented history of domestic conflict and violence both in Portugal, and in their native country.
Following a criminal investigation and forensic examinations, police said they gathered sufficient evidence to secure an arrest warrant outside the act of the offence. The investigation is being led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Ferreira do Alentejo.
The woman was arrested yesterday, and is due to appear before an investigating judge for her first judicial hearing, where bail/ remand measures will be considered. There appears to be a high probability that prosecutors will ask for pre-trial detention.
Meantime, the investigation remains ongoing as the PJ says it seeks to establish the full circumstances that led up to this fatal outcome.
