Vote counting is under way in Bangkok’s 2026 gubernatorial election, with early results putting Chadchart Sittipunt, Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk and Chaiwat Sathawornwichit in the lead, as residents await a clear winner.

Officials began tallying ballots shortly after polls closed, with counting centres across the capital reporting steady progress. The Election Commission expects the process to conclude  around 10pm, barring any last-minute surprises or the occasional calculator mishap.

Election officials said procedures were proceeding smoothly, with observers present at counting stations to ensure transparency.The contest has been closely followed by locals and expats alike, not only for its political implications but also for what it may mean for transport, air quality and the daily commute - that most Bangkok of concerns.

The capital’s governorship carries significant influence over urban policy, and candidates have campaigned on promises ranging from flood management to public transport improvements.
