Jakarta (ANTARA) - Febri Wahyuni Sabran, coordinator of the Gerakan Indonesia Cerah (Bright Indonesia Movement/GIC), said public support for the National Police is an invaluable asset.
"A police force viewed positively by the majority of the public can be an effective social glue, especially amidst political dynamics often marked by tension and sharp differences of opinion between the government and critical groups in society," she said in a statement on Sunday.
Her remarks came in response to a Kompas survey showing public trust in the Indonesian National Police (Polri) at 82.4 percent, with 80.6 percent of respondents assessing that Polri’s performance is improving.
Febri said rising public trust is a form of social capital that must be maintained, strengthened, and consolidated by the police, as it serves as a bridge between state security institutions and communities.
Amid the government’s transition and various socio-political challenges, she said the police’s role as a stabilizing force, guardian of democracy, and partner to the public has become increasingly important.
Improvements in Polri’s performance also reflect meaningful progress in ongoing reform efforts, as recognized by the public, she added.
She further noted that strong public trust provides the police with solid public backing in carrying out their duties.
“This support is the result of sustained and measurable reforms whose benefits have been directly felt by the public,” she said.
Representing civil society groups, Febri said the achievement is significant, as increased public confidence in police reform creates greater opportunities for cooperation between the police and the public in maintaining order and security.
She emphasized that trust is the most valuable form of social capital in the relationship between security forces and the communities they serve.
When public trust is built organically through real reform, the potential for cooperation between police and communities in maintaining national stability becomes stronger and more meaningful, she added.
According to her, the PRESISI (Predictive, Responsible, and Transparent Policing with Justice) concept serves as the main blueprint for internal police reform.
She said the framework aims to transform the National Police into a more proactive, transparent, and justice-oriented institution.
“The Kompas Research survey provides clear evidence that these reforms have moved beyond concepts and have produced tangible improvements recognized by the public,” she said.
