Person dies in crash on SH3 near Whanganui

One person has died in a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 3 in Kai Iwi, Whanganui.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 2am on Monday.

One person died at the scene.

The road was closed between Kai Iwi Valley Road and Watt Livingstone Road.

Crash investigators were on the scene and the section of highway was expected to be closed for some time.

Northbound traffic was being detoured left onto Watt Livingstone Road, then onto Rapanui Road, Handley Road, Kai Iwi Valley Road, and left to rejoin SH3. The reverse applied for southbound vehicles.

Motorists should expect delays on the detour.
