MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) heightened its monitoring for security measures ahead of the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“At this time, the PNP has not monitored any specific or credible threat directly related to the impeachment proceedings,” the national police chief, Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., said in a statement on Monday.
“Nevertheless, we are maintaining heightened monitoring and close coordination with our intelligence and operational units to promptly address any emerging concern,” he added.

The top cop further noted that the national police force’s monitoring included “possible extremist activities, public disturbances and misinformation campaigns that could incite violence.”
Duterte is set to stand trial before the Senate as an impeachment court starting July 6 to face allegations of misusing public funds, amassing unexplained wealth, bribing Department of Education officials and threatening the life of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“We have existing protocols for securing major government events and are prepared to coordinate closely with the Senate and other concerned agencies to ensure that the proceedings are conducted safely, peacefully and without disruption,” Nartatez said.
“We encourage everyone to remain calm, respect the rule of law, and exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully. The PNP will remain impartial and committed to protecting both public safety and constitutional freedoms,” he added. /mr
