Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has disclosed that 41 suspects have been charged with culpable homicide over the mob killing of Malama Ummulkhairi Usman Aliyu in Maraban Jos, Igabi Local Government Area.
The governor made this known at the weekend during a condolence visit to the deceased’s family.
Ummulkhairi was allegedly lynched and her body set ablaze after being falsely accused of attempting to kidnap children.
Sani said security agencies had made significant progress in the investigation.
“So far, 41 persons have been charged with culpable homicide. Another 41 were investigated, while 30 suspects have also been charged with unlawful assembly,” he said.
He vowed that everyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law, adding that the state government would not tolerate jungle justice.
The governor said he immediately directed top government officials to visit the bereaved family while working with the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to ensure justice.
He also ordered an investigation into the conduct of security personnel during the incident, particularly the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Maraban Jos, to determine whether there was any negligence or complicity.
Sani announced that the Kaduna State Government would support the deceased’s husband and four children, including sponsoring the children’s education.
Meanwhile, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and a dangerous sign of growing lawlessness.
In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the organisation called for a transparent investigation and the prosecution of everyone involved, including any security personnel found negligent or complicit.
JNI also appealed to religious and community leaders to intensify public enlightenment against mob justice and violence fuelled by rumours and misinformation.
