The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening local vigilante groups across rural communities to curb kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities.
Shekwolo stated this while addressing journalists shortly after presiding over an expanded security meeting attended by traditional rulers, community leaders and representatives of various security agencies at the council secretariat on Friday.
He said the security of lives and property remained one of his administration’s top priorities, adding that the council had already put measures in place to enhance security across the 10 wards of the area council.
According to him, supporting local vigilante groups to work in collaboration with conventional security agencies will enable residents of rural communities to go about their daily activities without fear.
He noted that Kuje Area Council has more than 200 rural communities spread across difficult terrain, making it imperative to strengthen local vigilante groups.
“As the Chief Security Officer of Kuje Area Council, we consider it important to protect the lives and property of our people. That informed our decision to convene this emergency security meeting to discuss ways of strengthening the local vigilantes to work closely with security agencies in tackling kidnapping, banditry and other crimes across the council,” he said.
Shekwolo also urged traditional rulers and community leaders to be vigilant about the people they admit into their communities and to promptly report suspicious individuals to security agencies.
