Kathmandu. A CCTV video that has gone viral on social media, showing a child being repeatedly assaulted inside a daycare room without adult supervision, is not from Nepal, despite widespread speculation online. The footage has been traced to a preschool in Maharashtra, India.
The video, which has been widely shared on Facebook and other social media platforms, shows three children alone in a room. One child is seen repeatedly biting, pinching, and hitting another child, while the victim cries continuously. A third child attempts to intervene but backs away after being threatened and unsuccessfully tries to open the locked door.
The CCTV footage, timestamped between 11:20 am and 11:30 am, appears to show the assault continuing for around 10 minutes without any teacher or staff member entering the room.
As the video circulated online, many users claimed it was from Nepal and questioned the safety of daycare centres. Some accused the school of negligence for leaving young children unattended, while others tagged Nepal Police, demanding an investigation.
However, the incident did not occur in Nepal.
According to Indian media reports, the video is from FirstCry Intellitots Pre-School in the CIDCO area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
Indian news outlet NDTV reported that the incident occurred on June 22 after a 29-year-old lawyer dropped her 23-month-old son at the daycare at around 10:30 am. The child's parents were informed after 2 pm that he had sustained only minor injuries. However, when they arrived at the daycare and examined the child, they found multiple injuries across his body.
Another viral CCTV clip from the same incident shows a female staff member leaving three children inside the classroom after taking one child outside and closing the door. Moments later, one child begins attacking another. According to reports, the injured child remained without adult intervention for about 45 minutes.
Indian media reported that the child suffered injuries to his face, nose, lips, chest, back, and legs and was taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Following a complaint filed by the parents, police registered a case against six individuals, including the preschool's CEO, principal, two managers, and the staff member seen leaving the children unattended.
The viral video has reignited concerns over child safety and supervision at daycare centres, while also highlighting the spread of misleading claims about the video's origin on social media.
