The fatal collapse of a natural arch in Comino which claimed the life of a young tourist over the weekend is a tragic reminder of just how desperately Malta needs a national geological service, experts have warned.
“The cost of inaction,” the Malta Chamber of Geologists wrote this morning, saying the heartbreaking incident serves as a stark and devastating reminder of Malta’s ongoing unpreparedness for geological hazards”.
Decrying Malta’s “systemic failure to manage our islands’ geological processes and features”, the Chamber continued by saying it had been “consistently appealing to the government for years” to establish a National Geological Service.
“Unfortunately, our expert advice, warnings, and structured proposals continue to be ignored by the current administration,” it finished, before leaving one final stark warning and worrying statistic. “How many more deaths are required before the administration realises that Malta remains the only country in Europe without a national Geological Service?”
