Bulog declares 200,000 tons of rice ready for export

Jakarta (ANTARA) - State logistics agency Perum Bulog has prepared 200,000 tons of premium rice for export to several countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“We currently have around 200,000 tons of five percent premium rice on standby. If urgent requests are needed, we can ship it immediately," Bulog President Director Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani stated at the agency’s warehouse for the Jakarta and Banten Regional office here on Monday.

Rizal noted that Indonesia's export plan includes shipping 200,000 tons of rice to Malaysia, 10,000 tons to Singapore, and 50,000 tons per month to the UAE.

Bulog is also eyeing further expansion into neighboring markets, specifically Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

“I ask for your blessings so that Bulog can sell its products—Indonesian rice—to international markets," Rizal remarked, adding that the 10,000 tons for Singapore have already been prepared alongside the order from Malaysia.

The drive to tap into the Singaporean market gained political momentum on Monday during a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman and Singaporean Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu at the ministry's headquarters in Jakarta.

Amran confirmed that negotiations are underway to export at least 10,000 tons of rice to Singapore to fortify food cooperation between the two nations.

The minister emphasized that the export expansion is heavily supported by robust national rice production and substantial reserves.

Currently, government rice stocks have reached approximately 5.1 million tons. With Bulog's state warehouse capacity capped at around 3 million tons, the government has resorted to storing the surplus in rented warehouses.

Amran further explained that rice exports to Singapore are not entirely new, as private businesses have previously engaged in the trade.

However, the current initiative seeks to establish a formal cooperation scheme linking Indonesian state-owned enterprises with private partners in Singapore to significantly expand bilateral food trade, he added.
