MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) arrested two individuals for an alleged illegal recruitment scheme in Pasig City, the unit said on Monday.
In a statement, the CIDG said its Anti-Transnational Crime Unit caught the suspects inside a fast food restaurant along Concepcion Avenue in Barangay San Joaquin last Wednesday afternoon.
The CIDG identified the two arrested suspects as a woman with the alias “Andeng” and a man with the alias “Angel,” both of whom were Taguig City residents.

According to the police, last April, Andeng and Angel had promised the victims that, for a P183,930 fee for processing and plane tickets, they would secure jobs as restaurant staff in Armenia for a daily wage of €14 (roughly P900) and a monthly food allowance of €200 (roughly P13,900).

After the victims had paid the initial fee, the suspects again asked for P31,740 each in supposed additional processing fees, prompting the victims to seek police assistance.
“Coordination and verification made with the Department of Migrant Workers revealed that the suspects were neither licensed nor authorized to recruit or deploy overseas migrant workers thus rendering their recruitment illegal,” the CIDG explained.

“Initial investigation also revealed that the issued plane tickets to the complainants are fake or not genuine,” it added.
Both suspects were taken into police custody, awaiting cases for estafa and violation of Republic Act No. 8042 or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act. /cb
