Hunters have rescued seven students of Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, Borno State, who were abducted by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Daily Trust had reported that suspected ISWAP fighters picked all students who were in their classrooms during Monday’s attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa, in Askira-Uba Local Government Area.
However, vigilante sources said the hunters trailed the terrorists into the surrounding forests and engaged them.
“They managed to free 7 students from their captors and handed them over to the military,” one of the vigilantes said.

Confirming the rescue, the Councillor representing the Lassa, Jagila Jabula, said all the freed captives were female students.
“We are praying for the hunters to defeat the assailants and secure the release of our loved ones,” he said.
The police public relations officer Nahum Kenneth Daso has confirmed the abduction of the students.
He said the terrorists went into the hall where the students were writing NECO examination and whisked away students and teachers to an unknown destination.
Nahum said the attackers were confronted by security forces, which minimized the scale of abduction.
He said the abduction was carried out by suspected ISWAP members and police were currently combing the bush to free the captives.
“It’s Lassa market day, so they took advantage, infiltrated the market on motorcycles and went to Government Day Secondary School, Lassa.
“They shot and killed one teacher and took away all the students who were in their classrooms,” he said.
This is coming 47 days after 42 pupils of Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School were abducted in the same Askira-Uba local government area.
Parents of the pupils decried that they were not yet contacted by the abductors of their children, raising fear that their children might not be alive.
