Destiny Church's Brian Tamaki says his guns have been seized by police

Controversial church leader Brian Tamaki says his guns have been seized by police.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Destiny Church founder said unknown to him, his firearms licence had been cancelled two days ago and police had shown up to his house to take his firearms.

Tamaki said he had been a hunter for 35 years.

"I think this is all got to do with simply trying to defend my country. Keep New Zealand New Zealand with the mass immigration."

He continued his video saying if he had used them to hunt on the weekend, he would have been doing so illegally.

Tamaki said police probably thought he was "dangerous" so they had "busted up" to take all of his registered firearms.

He can be heard in the video telling police there was possibly one unlicenced gun in his possession.

"He [Modi] is currently purging India of all Christians and burning church buildings down," Tamaki said.

"I think we should reciprocate in kind," he said, going on to suggest "purging" New Zealand of Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims, and destroying mosques and temples.

Ethnic Communities Minister Mark Mitchell labelled Tamaki's comments as the "actions of a scared bully".

Mitchell told RNZ he understood police were assessing Tamaki's remarks against the thresholds set out in the Human Rights Act.

At the time, a police spokesperson said they were aware of the video and were making enquiries into its contents.

In a separate statement to ethnic community leaders, police said they wanted to reassure Indian and wider ethnic communities that their safety and wellbeing remained a priority.

"We are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to engage with community leaders to understand and respond to any concerns," the statement said.

"The material has been referred for legal assessment, and any further action will be considered in line with legislation."

Police have been approached for comment about Tamaki's firearms being seized.
