MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area (LPA) off Masbate has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours, according to the state weather bureau.
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Chenel Dominguez, in an early morning update, said the LPA was spotted over the coastal waters of San Pascual town at 3 a.m.
“It has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone whether during its passage over our landmass or when it crosses our landmass and into the West Philippine Sea,” Dominguez said in Filipino.

Dominguez added that Pagasa may also raise Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of Southern Luzon and Visayas.
She also reported that the southwest monsoon or “habagat” has weakened and is now only prevailing in Palawan.
The “habagat” are winds from the southwest that bring rains to parts of the country. /gsg
