'Avoid the area': Gas leak closes intersection in Wellington's Mount Victoria

An intersection in Wellington's Mount Victoria was cordoned off on Tuesday morning due to a gas leak.

Police and Fire and Emergency NZ were notified of the leak around 10.35am near the intersection of Pirie Street and Austin Street, a police spokesperson said.

A gas main had been struck.

"There have been no reports of injuries but the intersection is currently cordoned off and people are asked to avoid the area," a police spokesperson said.

Police said shortly before midday the cordon was lifted and the area cleared.
