Ibom Air has recorded a major milestone in its expansion strategy with the successful operation of its first scheduled international flight from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Accra, Ghana, officially transforming the Victor Attah International Airport into an international gateway.
The inaugural flight, which departed on Sunday, June 28, also completed a return journey from Accra to Uyo, marking the commencement of the airline’s scheduled international operations from its home base.
The new service also demonstrated seamless passenger connectivity, with travellers transiting between Abuja and Accra through Uyo, a development the airline described as a significant step toward improving regional air travel and positioning Akwa Ibom as an emerging aviation hub.
Commenting on the milestone, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ibom Air, George Uriesi, said the airline was pleased to commence international operations from Uyo and successfully connect passengers between Abuja and Accra through the city’s newly upgraded airport.
“We are delighted to have commenced international operations out of Uyo. More importantly, we successfully facilitated seamless transit for passengers between Abuja and Accra through Uyo,” Uriesi said.
According to him, the new terminal at the Victor Attah International Airport offers passengers a world-class travel experience in a modern facility designed to provide comfort, efficiency and convenience.
He said the commencement of scheduled international services marks a turning point for air travel in Nigeria and reflects the growing capacity of Akwa Ibom State’s aviation infrastructure.
Uriesi also commended Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for his support and commitment to developing the state’s aviation sector.
“We believe the game has changed for air travel in Nigeria. We are deeply grateful to His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for his visionary leadership and unwavering support for the aviation ecosystem in Akwa Ibom State, which has made this level of service possible,” he added.
Ibom Air said it will operate the Uyo-Accra route twice weekly, with flights scheduled every Sunday and Thursday.
The airline noted that the new route provides passengers from Abuja and neighbouring states with convenient access to Accra through Uyo, offering an alternative travel option supported by modern airport facilities and streamlined transit connections.
According to the airline, the launch of the international service forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen connectivity within Nigeria and across West Africa while improving the overall passenger experience.
The development is also expected to boost tourism, trade and investment between Nigeria and Ghana, while reinforcing Akwa Ibom State’s ambition of becoming a key aviation and commercial hub in the region.
Since commencing commercial operations in 2019, Ibom Air has built a reputation for schedule reliability, customer service and operational efficiency. The launch of scheduled international services represents another milestone in the airline’s growth, expanding its network beyond domestic destinations and strengthening its presence in the regional aviation market.
