BACOLOD CITY —A faint crater glow was observed at the summit of Kanlaon Volcano from 3:40 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Mari-Andylene Quintia, Phivolcs resident volcanologist, said the glow typically occurs when magma has risen to a shallow depth beneath the volcano.

She explained that the phenomenon could be a precursor to an explosive or magmatic eruption, as it may indicate that magma is nearing the crater summit. However, she stressed that it is still too early to determine whether an eruption will occur.

Quintia said Phivolcs will continue to monitor the crater closely. If the glow persists or intensifies, it could prompt the agency to raise Kanlaon’s current Alert Level 2 status.
A similar crater glow was observed at Kanlaon in May, lasting for two to three days before fading./coa
