
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said it has directed the Philippine National Police (PNP) to exercise maximum tolerance and implement appropriate security measures during the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) rally along Edsa on Tuesday.
The PNP, in coordination with the concerned local government unit, was tasked with ensuring that the activity remained peaceful, orderly, and safe for everyone.

“The DILG calls on all participants and stakeholders to exercise their rights responsibly, uphold the rule of law, and cooperate with authorities throughout the activity,” it said.

The DILG also reaffirmed its respect for individuals’ constitutional right to peacefully assemble and express their views.
“The Department remains committed to protecting public safety while upholding the constitutional freedoms of every Filipino,” the DILG said.
Thousands of protesters gathered at the People Power Monument early Tuesday, prompting the closure of several roads and causing traffic congestion.

Tensions escalated between rally participants and law enforcement personnel deployed in the area. An Inquirer journalist covering the rally along Edsa witnessed at least three arrests as of 9 a.m.
The INC said in a statement that the Edsa rally was held to call for transparency, accountability, justice, and peace after the Office of the Ombudsman announced on Monday that it would file a non-bailable plunder case against Senator Rodante Marcoleta before the Sandiganbayan. /gsg
