Hon. Fyneman Wilson, a close political ally of the national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Party (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the NDC as a “sole proprietorship” that is “heading nowhere.”
Wilson, a former Political Adviser to Senator Dickson during his tenure as Governor of Bayelsa State, announced his resignation from the NDC on Monday.
He led his supporters from across Bayelsa State into the APC during a reception held at the Golden Tulip, Government House, Onopa.
The gale of defections has hit Dickson’s home local government area of Sagbama since the Federal High Court in Lokoja ordered the deregistration of the NDC on Friday.
Over the weekend, NDC members in former Governor Dickson’s hometown of Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area, defected in large numbers to the APC.
Speaking during his defection, Wilson said his decision to leave the NDC was driven by the party’s lack of internal democracy and collective leadership, alleging that it had become a “one-man show” with no clear future.
The defection ceremony was attended by key APC leaders in Bayelsa State, including the Deputy Governor, Pastor Peter Akpe; former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi; APC State Secretary, Barr. Odoji Japan; and other party stakeholders.
Daily Trust recalls that last Saturday, in Toru-Orua Ward 2, Sagbama Local Government—Dickson’s immediate community—NDC members who were received by local APC leaders said they decided to join the ruling party because of its progressive leadership and vision.
Among those who defected were Comrade Victor Matthew, Mr. Noah Apeikumor, and Mrs. Monica Ebiowei, alongside several youth and women leaders from the community.
The APC Publicity Secretary for Toru-Orua Ward 2, Comrade Arekedoumene Andrew, announced the defections in a statement on Sunday.
He noted that the defectors were welcomed by APC leaders, including High Chief Mrs. Stella Ugolo, Hon. Odogu Akpolaemi, Dr. Akpos Tounaregha, and other party stakeholders.
Reacting to the developments, the Publicity Secretary of the NDC in Bayelsa State, Prince Mac-Ake, said such movements are normal during the political season when politicians align and realign, adding that this does not weaken the NDC in Bayelsa State.
He maintained that because Toru-Orua is the home of the party’s national leader, the NDC continues to enjoy massive support in the area.
He said: “Normally, at this point in the political season, windows of alignment and realignment will open, so this is not strange. However, that does not mean the NDC is weak. We are also receiving massive defections from the APC, which happens to be the ruling party in the state. Politics is about interest, but we are focused and moving forward with our agenda.
“The NDC has an organic support base. Some of these characters might have been with us initially, but they did not align with our standards. It is possible they are trying to pursue new political aspirations, but we remain focused. We are people of conviction, and we know where we are going.
“Everybody knows that Toru-Orua is the home of our national leader, and he enjoys overwhelming support from his hometown. It is as simple as a ratio of one to a hundred—if 99 people are standing on one side, the one who crosses over to the APC is insignificant.”
