MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday urged organizers of a lightning rally along Edsa to ensure their activities comply with the law and do not disrupt public order as thousands of protesters gathered at the People Power Monument.
The demonstration drew thousands of protesters, prompting authorities to deploy additional police and traffic personnel to manage the crowd and ease congestion along affected sections of Edsa.
The rally was organized by members of the Iglesia ni Cristo, who said the demonstration was meant to call for transparency, accountability, justice and peace following the Office of the Ombudsman’s announcement that it would file a non-bailable plunder case against Sen. Rodante Marcoleta before the Sandiganbayan.

In a statement, AFP spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad said Metro Manila-based military units are closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other concerned government agencies, with the PNP taking the lead in maintaining peace and order during the protest.
The AFP said it recognizes “the constitutional right of every Filipino to peacefully assemble and express their views” but stressed that public activities should be conducted in accordance with existing laws, local regulations, and permit requirements.
“We likewise encourage organizers to ensure that their activities do not unduly disrupt public order or cause unnecessary inconvenience to commuters, workers, students, and other members of the public,” the AFP said.
The protest later resulted in confrontations between some participants and police officers assigned to secure the area. At least three individuals had been arrested as of 9 a.m. after tensions flared during the demonstration.
