The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike in 11 state-owned universities if the governments of Edo, Delta, Ondo, Adamawa, Borno, Taraba and Yobe states fail to implement the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement by the end of July.
The Benin and Yola zones of the union issued the warning at separate press conferences on Monday, accusing the affected state governments of failing to implement the agreement six months after it was signed.
Benin Zonal Coordinator, Prof Monday Igbafen, said ASUU branches in the affected universities had begun mobilising members for a total shutdown of academic activities.
The universities include Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma; Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa; Delta State University, Abraka; University of Delta, Agbor; Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba; Southern Delta University, Ozoro; Adamawa State University, Mubi; Borno State University, Maiduguri; Taraba State University, Jalingo; and Yobe State University, Damaturu.
Igbafen said while federal universities and several state universities had implemented the agreement, the affected states were yet to pay the Consolidated Academic and Technologists Allowance (CATA), other approved allowances and arrears from January 2026.
Similarly, Yola Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Dani Mamman, said the continued failure to implement the agreement and other negotiated allowances had created tension in the affected institutions.
He described the situation as unfair and a violation of collective bargaining, stressing that lecturers were only demanding their legitimate entitlements.
The union called on the affected governors to urgently implement the agreement and settle all outstanding arrears to avert an indefinite strike and disruption of academic activities
