Former Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Strategic Committee on the State’s Crises, Senator Joshua Dariye, said the prolonged security challenges in Plateau are complex and require comprehensive solutions beyond military action.
Dariye spoke on Monday while presenting the committee’s report to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Old Government House, Rayfield, Jos.
The committee was constituted following a high-level engagement between Plateau stakeholders and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the causes of the recurring crises and recommend lasting solutions.
Dariye said the committee produced a two-volume report containing detailed findings, implementation strategies and practical recommendations.
He said the report concluded that the state’s security challenges are historical, multidimensional and cannot be attributed to a single cause.
He said Plateau has accumulated several reports, peace initiatives and policy recommendations over the years, but poor implementation, weak institutions, inadequate follow-up and lack of accountability have hindered progress.
He said the committee recommended a comprehensive recovery plan that includes protecting vulnerable communities, supporting internally displaced persons, rebuilding affected settlements, restoring livelihoods, trauma healing, youth empowerment, women’s participation, interfaith collaboration, traditional conflict resolution and education.
The report also urged the state government to improve its public communication by correcting negative narratives and projecting Plateau as a peaceful destination for investment and tourism.
Receiving the report, Governor Mutfwang described it as a strategic roadmap for addressing the state’s security and socio-political challenges.
He said President Tinubu had shown genuine concern for Plateau and directed the state to intensify efforts toward achieving lasting peace.
The governor said the report would be presented to a wider stakeholders’ forum to ensure inclusive participation and ownership of the peace process, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to dialogue, institutional reforms and collaboration with the Federal Government.
