COTABATO CITY – The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) on Tuesday expressed its sympathy over the passing of Haron Abas, a member of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) or Bangsamoro Parliament, who passed away on Sunday, June 28.
“We stand in profound grief alongside the leadership and members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), as well as the entire Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), as we mourn the loss of a dedicated patriot and champion of peace,” the OPAPRU said in a statement.
Abas was popularly known in the revolutionary front in Muslim Mindanao as Muhammad Ameen, secretary of the MILF Central Committee.

Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento said that Abas had dedicated his life to the Bangsamoro struggle for self-determination and to the Bangsamoro peace process.
He said that as MILF Central Committee secretary, former Commissioner of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission, and Member of the Bangsamoro Parliament, Abas played an instrumental role in laying the foundations of peace in the BARMM.
Sarmiento noted that Abas’ transition from the revolutionary to the halls of governance as a member of the BARMM Parliament “demonstrated his enduring belief that a just and lasting peace is achieved through dialogue, collaboration, and democratic governance.”
Sarmiento said that the late leader’s contributions to fostering unity and implementing the normalization process left an indelible mark on the history of the Bangsamoro.

As the OPAPRU honors Abas’ legacy, the national government, under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, reaffirms its unwavering partnership with the Bangsamoro people in realizing the vision of peace and prosperity that Abas fought so hard to build.
Abas, who served as the secretary of the MILF central committee since 1988 under the late founding chairperson Salamat Hashim and later under chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, died in a hospital in Davao City due to a lingering illness.
