Number of Italians killed by Venezuela earthquakes up to 16

Victims include a whole family of five

The number of Italian nationals known

to have died in last week's twin earthquakes in Venezuela has

climbed to 16 after confirmation that the members of two

families are among over 1,700 people who have died.

Another 40 Italians are among tens of thousands reported

missing.

The two families wiped out by the disaster were both originally

from the Salerno area.

The first was a family of five from Licusati, while the second

was a couple and their 22-year-old daughter from Laviano.

Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has said

around 150,000 Italian nationals, many also with Venezuela

citizenship, are registered as residing in Venezuela.
