
LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — The local government has donated 56 handheld metal detectors to the Department of Education (DepEd) Legazpi Schools Division Office to strengthen security in public schools following the fatal school shooting in Tacloban City.

Mayor Hisham Ismail said the devices would help ensure the safety of learners and school personnel.

“This is a precautionary measure to prevent another incident like the one that happened in Tacloban,” Ismail said.

The Local School Board conducted a demonstration on the proper use of the handheld metal detectors before the turnover.
Schools Division Superintendent Danilo Despi welcomed the donation, saying the partnership between DepEd and the city government would further enhance campus safety.
“We thank Mayor Hisham Ismail for donating these handheld metal detectors. They will help prevent crimes and improve security in our schools,” Despi said.
Police Lt. Col. Arthur Tagtag Jr., chief of the Legazpi City Police Station, said the devices would help maintain peace and order by preventing the entry of contraband, particularly bladed weapons, firearms, and other dangerous items, into school premises. /mcm
