A middle-aged man has been identified by the PSP police after allegedly filming three children at a shopping centre in Portimão.
The incident, which reportedly took place on Sunday, June 28, gained widespread attention after the children’s father shared a video of the confrontation on social media.
Fábio Almeida said he confronted the man after noticing what he believed was the suspect filming his three children while they were eating in the shopping centre’s food court.
The father said he first became suspicious and deliberately walked behind the man, pretending to go and buy a coffee. He claims he then saw the phone pointed towards the table where his children were sitting before confronting the suspect.
In the video, the man appears to acknowledge recording the children and tells the father he has already deleted the footage.
Shopping centre security staff were called by the father before PSP officers arrived, a PSP source told Notícias ao Minuto.
The father later filed a formal complaint with Portugal’s PJ criminal police and shared on social media that he has since received messages from people claiming to have witnessed or experienced similar incidents involving the same individual.
According to Notícias ao Minuto, authorities will require authorisation from the Public Prosecutor’s Office before inspecting the seized mobile phone.
