How the bathroom break turned into a public confrontation
A dad’s visit to the women’s washroom with his little daughters turned controversial after another man called the police: Who do you think was right?
The incident involved Oklahoma father Tyler Brodsky, who was travelling with his two young daughters after a family trip. During a stop at a gas station, the girls needed to use the washroom.According to Brodsky, the men's washroom was occupied and the cubicles couldn’t be called clean. He noticed that the women's washroom was empty, knocked on the door, announced himself, and took the girls inside so they could use the facilities.
Soon, the bathroom visit turned into a heated confrontation.
"There's a man in the women's bathroom"
While the young dad was helping his daughters wash their hands in the basin. As he was filming, another man entered the women's washroom and began confronting him. "There is a man with his two little girls using the bathroom," the man yelled into the phone. "He is washing his hands with his daughters right now." One of his daughters was seen crying and holding onto her father while the other man continued talking on the phone.
The man on call repeatedly stated that his wife was trying to use the bathroom with her ill mom. "Y'all make this man famous. We stopped at a QuikTrip on our road trip from Florida back to Oklahoma so my daughters could use the restroom," Brodsky wrote in his caption. "The women's restroom was empty, so I took them in. I'd rather do that than bring two little girls into a men's bathroom full of grown men and dirty stalls.” He continued, “This guy comes barging in yelling, scares my daughters, and somehow thinks THEY should've been in the men's room instead.
Am I wrong here?”Later the police arrived at the gas station and, after hearing both sides, Brodsky posted on his social media that the cops told him he hadn't done anything wrong. The encounter ended without any charges or further action. The father of two says that girl dads and boy moms are often put in situations where there isn't a perfect solution. "Most parents aren't trying to make anyone uncomfortable," Brodsky said.
“We're simply trying to take care of our children and keep them safe.”
Why the incident struck a chord with parents
The video quickly went viral, drawing millions of views and thousands of comments from parents, caregivers and childcare professionals. Many supported Brodsky's decision, saying they would also prioritise their child's safety over the discomfort of entering an empty women's washroom. Others argued that women deserve to expect privacy in designated female spaces. What would you have done in the father's situation?
