We have not secured any buyers yet, but we are exploring opportunities so these products can be exported to other countries.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso stated that the Indonesian government is seeking to export eggs and chicken meat to Singapore as both commodities are currently in surplus.
“Our eggs and meat are currently in surplus. We have excessive production,” he told the press in Jakarta on Tuesday.
However, Budi stated the ministry is still working to find buyers, and once identified, they will be matched with Indonesian producers.
"We have not secured any buyers yet, but we are exploring opportunities so these products can be exported to other countries. There is export potential," he said.
The minister explained that the decline in prices is not limited to eggs and chicken, as several other staple food commodities have also experienced price drops.
He added that current egg and chicken prices have fallen below the government's retail price ceiling (HET).
Egg prices currently stand at Rp26,000 (approximately US$1.45) per kilogram, down from the HET of Rp30,000 (around US$1.68).
Likewise, chicken meat prices have fallen from the HET of Rp40,000 (approximately US$2.23) per kilogram to Rp36,000 (approximately US$2) per kilogram.
"If we look at the Market and Basic Necessities Monitoring System (SP2KP), prices of several commodities have indeed declined. During my visit to Banyumas yesterday, I observed that prices for several commodities had fallen," he said.
In addition to the production surplus, Budi noted that the suspension of the government's Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program has also reduced demand for eggs and chicken meat, contributing to the current oversupply.
