Nobel prize-winning Italian physicist
Giorgio Parisi blasted climate-denying politicians on Tuesday
with the deadly heatwave Italy and much of Europe is currently
enduring highlighting the devastating impact of global heating.
"The problem is that the further we go, the worse the
temperatures get," Parisi said on the sidelines of an event
organized by the Green-Left Alliance (AVS).
"If you consider that, while the average global temperatures are
up by 1°C, in Italy they are up by 2°C, so medium-to-extreme
(weather) events are becoming more and more frequent.
"Sure, you might get used to it, but you might end up in the
graveyard before you do.
"Denialism by the political world is damaging because we are
failing to realize that we're facing a very serious problem.
"Furthermore, we also fail to understand that switching to
renewable energy can actually improve our lives.
"For example, if we were able to replace private transportation
with efficient public transportation, we would consume
significantly less oil and gasoline".
US President Donald Trump is a climate denier.
Other politicians, such as Italian Civil Protection Minister
Nello Musumeci, do not dispute that climate change is real, but
say whether it is caused by humankind is open to debate.
The overwhelming majority of scientists say that global heating
is being driven by human greenhouse gas emissions such as the
burning of fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal.
